Kelsey Hakeem
Farmer
I grew up in Grand Rapids
and graduated from high school in 2002, when I moved to Ann
Arbor to attend University
of Michigan. After a few years, I
took a break from school and spent some time in Italy
as a nanny, then returning to Grand Rapids
to where I joined Riley Family Farm CSA as a working share member and had my
first real experience growing food. After my second summer working on the Riley
farm, I moved to Lansing to attend Michigan
State University.
There, I graduated from the Organic Farming Certificate Program. Most of my
time at Blandford is spent in the field or in the greenhouse planting, weeding,
or harvesting. There are a lot of possibilities for the future of Blandford
farm and I am excited to be a part of it. I love growing food because it is so
simple. I believe healthy, nutritious food is a human right. One of
my goals for 2010 is to get goats back at the farm. When I am not farming some
of the things I enjoy are dancing, swimming, and making art.
